Since the premier of the show ‘CSI’ years ago, more and more people are taking up an interest in the criminal justice field. Many of those who take a few moments to put serious thought into it might find themselves wanting to become a crime scene investigator. While the television show usually shows the cases being solved, the characters looking prim and proper and make things look a lot more simple than they really are, reality will demonstrate a very different scenario.

The role of a crime scene investigator is very crucial to solving any crime and finding answers to what really happened. It definitely isn’t a glamorous job or for those with weak stomachs. The hours can be long and brutal and sleep may be rare at times. A crime scene investigator is much more likely to get stressed and burned out than that of many other jobs. Sure, the role sounds wonderful. It would be wonderful to tell people that you are a crime scene investigator. Impressive. However, it isn’t impressive when you’re getting ready to watch your children open up their Christmas gifts and your pager goes off. When that pager goes off, you’re expected to be someplace as soon as possible. Crime scenes must be processed immediately so that evidence isn’t lost, damaged or destroyed as the hours move on.

A crime scene investigator might not always have the most pleasant of working conditions. They don’t work at a desk all day long. Instead, they are onsite of whatever needs to be investigated. You might find them digging in the dirt or crawling around a house. Crime scenes aren’t always attractive. Seeing a dead child or individual can stay lodged in your memories forever. A crime scene investigator has to take blood samples and look for fingerprints. They may spend many hours working around dead bodies and unpleasant scenes. That can take a huge toll on someone.

Then, there is the fact that there is no room for error as a crime scene investigator. One tiny mistake can have a case thrown out of court. A tiny mistake can determine a person’s guilt or innocence. Families, friends and the court systems are depending on everything to be absolutely perfect when solving a crime. If a crime scene investigator makes a mistake, the repercussions aren’t just getting a scolding from the boss, it means that justice may not have prevailed. Helping justice prevail and figuring out the facts is what makes a crime scene investigator thrive. It makes the long hours and unpleasant working conditions all worthwhile.

Continuing Education is a necessity

Continuing education is a broad concept. It includes all the learning opportunities outside basic and primary education. It extends beyond completion of formal schooling and into adult continuing education. When we talk about adult education, we are talking about education for different reasons. Some adults want to continue their education for mental stimulation, for personal growth, self confidence, social interaction or to acquire new knowledge. No matter what the reasons for studying may be, one thing is certain, adult continuing education is a major contributor to the society’s well being.

In today’s information and technological world, ongoing movement calls for life-long learning. There are many technologies that allow learners and learning processes to break the defined segments of primitive education systems and support present dynamic new opportunities. These technologies have allowed for alternative mechanisms that help in facilitating the delivery of information in a low-cost way. Adult continuing education systems allow for learners to link new information to new sets of reference points around learning. An effective learning program needs to produce, not ‘knowers’ but learners. A knower simply accumulates facts and stores concepts while a learner creates, elaborates concepts and applies the knowledge gained. These concepts are fully valid to adult continuing education systems. The goal should be, not to learn to know or do, but to learn to become learning oriented. This requires learners who can adapt their activities each new day to what is happening.

Adult continuing education often displays characteristics that are not found in children education. These include problem-centered learning and task-oriented learning. Since adults prefer to deal with problems that are known to them, their education must be centered on meaningful problem-solving approaches that might be encountered in their particular life situations. Their education should also be directed towards the attainment of specific goals or toward solving particular problems.

Adult learners are also actively practicing experts in their respective fields. They usually unconsciously influence their learning progress as a result of their wide experiences. Because of their independent self-reliant attitude, adult learners tend to accomplish or solve problems by relying on their personal experiences. Humans learn best when they are presented with meaningful material that is based on already and mastered skills and knowledge. Since they are also willing to take an active part in the learning process, they also need adequate stimulus material to keep their enthusiasm going. Providing feedback by asking questions is also important in motivating and getting them actively involved. Finally, it should not be forgotten that even in adult continuing education, while educators love education, the adult students will love what education can bring.

Writing a Stand-Out College Admission Essay

These days, getting into college is harder than ever, with more students competing for precious spots at the top schools. Simply having a high GPA and strong test scores is often not enough to guarantee admission to your college or university of choice. Candidates must distinguish themselves from a large pool of hopeful applicants, many of whom have numbers that look as good or better than yours. This is where an excellent admission essay can really make the difference.

Many students mistakenly believe that the college admission essay is a less important aspect of a college application, secondary to those all-important statistics like grades and test scores. But this is not entirely true. Admissions officers at the top university are looking for students who can excel in college, who will make their institution look good through high achievement. Grades, standardized test scores and extra curricular activities can give them a sense of what kind of student you will be. But they are not perfect predictors. When choosing among many highly qualified applicants, the admissions people are looking for someone who stands out. They often turn to the college admission essay to learn more about those intangible qualities which make one student excel above the others.

So when writing an admission essay, keep in mind your primary goal. The purpose of the college application essay is to present yourself as someone who will contribute positively to the school. You must set yourself apart from the scores of other hopefuls. You must clearly outline in your application essay why you are unique, special and destined to succeed.

Be sure to include personal details in your admission essay. Tell a story about your life, one that will grab the attention of the reader and remain in his or her memory. The last thing you want is for your application essay to be forgettable.

One college applicant I know wrote an essay about a terrible car accident she suffered, which required her to undergo months of physical rehabilitation. Another great admission essay I read told about the student’s struggle to adapt after immigrating to the United States from Korea. You may not believe you have an interesting story to tell, but the truth is you probably do. Think of something challenging and character-building that happened to you, and use your application essay as an opportunity to tell the story and explain how it affected you.

Your college application essay should reflect who you are as an individual, not just as a student. Take the opportunity to write something personal and unique. Show the admissions officers that you are not just a set of information on a page; you are a multi-dimensional person who has real life experience and who will use that experience to excel for the rest of your life.

Online Education – Has it come of Age?

The area of online education is one of the fastest growing fields in the education sphere. The lure of online education is even more attractive to busy individuals and full time workers who see the need to improve in their education if they are to land on a high-paying position. This has in turn resulted in online education and online certification getting a wide appeal. One of the advantages of this trend is the fact that online certifications are now getting recognized by many organizations. Many employers from reputable firms also place the same emphasis on online certifications as traditional ones. Accredited universities online are many and it can rightly be said that online education has indeed come of age.

Today, it is not really necessary to sit inside a classroom and earn a degree. There are many accredited universities online that will save you this agony, especially if you are a work-at-home mom or a busy executive. There are also many accredited universities that are offer traditional degrees but are now beginning to branch into online education. Some of these colleges and institutions are world famous. If you are considering pursuing a degree course in one of these universities it is wise to first check if they are offering an online option. Online degrees from accredited universities online have many benefits over traditional degrees from the same universities.

Another benefit of pursuing online education is the possibility of dramatically reducing the time spent earning that certification. Many accredited universities online now offer what are called life experience degrees. These degrees are awarded to individuals who have demonstrated competencies in their area of specialization. An experience assessment is done first to ascertain the experience and once minimum qualifications are met and the fees paid, the certification is earned. It takes less than 2 months to earn a life experience degree. This however does not mean that it has less recognition. When it is earned from one of the accredited universities online, a life experience degree is similar to a traditional degree that takes 4 years to attain.

As more and more institutions embrace online education and as even more organizations and firms give online certifications the same priority as traditional certifications that they deserve, online education will likely replace the classroom environment. This is because online education offers more flexibility to students and lecturers, allows for more interactivity, more resources and is ultimately cheaper. All this puts accredited universities online ahead of the curve as we see education revolutionizing.

Let’s face it. In this economy having a secondary education degree is of the utmost importance. Better jobs, better pay, higher job satisfaction, all of these have been linked to college degrees. But what if you don’t have time? And college is expensive, and money’s tight as it is; isn’t that why you want a better job in the first place? Well, I recommend looking at a accredited online university for a secondary education, a diploma and a better skill set?

What is an accredited online university and how is it different than other educational institutions? An accredited online university is simply a distance-learning school that has gone through accreditation. Accreditation is just a fancy word for approval and validation from which an accredited online university is proved reputable. This is usually done by a national board of some sort that compares the accredited online university against its peers to ensure that educational standards are being met. To keep it short, don’t bother looking at an online university unless it’s an accredited online university; prospective hirers might not recognize accomplishments or degrees from unaccredited schools.

So what can you get from an accredited online university? With the emergence of the Internet and the growth of online communities, an accredited online university is now very much an acceptable institution for higher learning. Due to the severely smaller amount of overhead these schools have, many online schools offer courses from a wider range of subjects for a substantially lower tuition.

An accredited online university, especially the larger ones, will offer as many courses as many community and junior colleges. Whether you’re looking for a simple Trade related degree in Construction or Administrative Assistance or a Business or Medical degree or even something in the Humanities like Fashion or Creative Writing, there is nothing that the "brick and mortar" schools offer in terms of degree programs that you can’t find at an accredited online university. In fact, most online schools offer MORE degree programs than traditional schools. Distance learning also offers you the ability to take your classes at your pace, and around your schedule. Whether your evenings or mornings or weekends are open or your current job has seasonal variation, an accredited online university can give you the chance to earn your degree at your own pace.

Of course, the biggest concern when entering an accredited online university or any learning institution is the cost. But tuitions are routinely more affordable with the low overhead for the distance learning schools. And, just like other schools, a variety of financial aid, scholarships and student loans are available for an accredited online university. So whether you want to start a new career, advance in the one you’re currently in, or expand your knowledge, consider an accredited online university.
